What's Yokohama Jazz Promenade

“Yokohama Jazz Promenade” was started in 1993 through the involvement of citizens and musicians, according to the catchphrase: “Let’s turn the entire city of Yokohama into a music stage.” Its scale has steadily expanded over the years with the support of and cooperation from many people. As a result, it came to attract as many as 134,000 visitors in 2007. Along with the expansion of the Jazz Promenade, various jazz events of all sizes have come into being, and the number of jazz clubs operating in Yokohama has grown steadily. Today, Yokohama Jazz Promenade has become the festival that makes a strong appeal of “Yokohama as the City of Jazz,” thereby contributing to activate the town and increase the number of visitors.

Backed by the enterprising spirit of a port city, “Yokohama Jazz Promenade” integrally reflects the entire advantage of Yokohama’s history, culture and location. During the two days of the festival, top musicians from all over Japan gather here in Yokohama to perform in the “Jazz Hometown of Japan.” Attracting more and more musicians from overseas countries in recent years, Yokohama Jazz Promenade is becoming an event truly worthy for this international port city.

Taking full advantage of its historic background of nurturing prominent jazz musicians in Japan and the world, Yokohama Jazz Promenade will deliver the hottest, grooviest jazz music throughout Japan and the world.

Hall Live Concert

Veteran musicians perform something out of the ordinary, while the up-and-coming players take full swing of their original music. We offer you special stages featuring motivated performers both from within and outside Japan. We promise you an exciting and sensational stage that can “only be experienced in Yokohama.”

To allow every person from jazz starters to devotees to enjoy the event, various programs are offered ranging from traditional to modern, contemporary, and even Latin.

Sites: Yokohama City Port Opening Memorial Hall, Yokohama Kannai Hall, Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No.1, Landmark Hall, Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall, Yokohama Media and Communications Center, Osanbashi Pier Hall, etc.

Jazz Club Live

We also hold live concerts together with the jazz clubs that support and cultivate Yokohama’s daily jazz scenes. Jazz clubs with a totally different atmosphere from a music hall offer you the great appeal of an up-close performance that you can enjoy with a glass in your hand. (Participating live spots in 2007: 24 in total)

Street Live Performance

Centering on amateur musicians, live performances are also held on street corners and tourist sites. We create a stage where passers-by, tourists and shoppers can get in touch with the attractiveness of jazz, in order to expand and cultivate a new audience layer. Almost rivaling with professionals, their exciting stages are sure to enliven the already lively streets. (Participating sites in 2007: 23 in total)

街角ライブ

Competition

This competition is held to exploit and highlight new jazz stars from Yokohama. The judges, comprised from leading musicians, media-related people and jazz club members will single out the most skilled artists demonstrating their outstanding performance abilities at the live concerts. Many star performers have already been born from this competition.

Yokohama Jazz Promenade is the hand-made event of the Yokohama citizens. The key project/operation organization is the “Yokohama JAZZ Promenade Executive Committee.”

Citizen Volunteer(Yokohama Jazz Crew)

Publicly-recruited citizen volunteers (Yokohama Jazz Crew) participate in the two-day operation. This event is growing not merely as a communication opportunity for the citizens, but more as a cultural activity created by the united efforts of all the Yokohama citizens.

Over 300 volunteers (Yokohama Jazz Crew) participate every year, supporting the management activities of the Yokohama Jazz Promenade.
